How do my drivers protect these vehicles, and the people riding in them, without breaking the bank?” At the time, I didn’t have a great answer. Back then, insurance for three-wheelers—especially the passenger-focused ones we build, the kind used for short urban commutes, school runs, and small cargo-plus-passenger routes in low-income and mid-income neighborhoods—was a gaping hole. Most insurance providers back then only offered policies for cars, motorcycles, or heavy cargo trucks, and those three-wheeler options they did have were either way too expensive for small business owners, or so bare-bones they left riders high and dry if something went wrong. Over the years, though, the space has shifted a lot, and as someone who builds these vehicles for a living, I’ve spent years testing every option, talking to underwriters, and listening to the drivers who use our products daily. Today, there are actual, workable insurance options for passenger electric tricycles—you just have to know where to look, and what to ask for. Passenger Electric Tricycle

Let’s start with the most common, and most underrated, category: specialty micro-vehicle insurance. A lot of people lump passenger e-trikes in with standard motorcycles, but that’s a mistake. Our models are slower, lighter, designed for short, stop-and-go trips, not highway speeds, and they carry 2 to 4 passengers at most—very different from a gas-powered motorcycle that’s built for cross-town trips with a single rider. A few insurance companies have caught on to this, and now offer policies tailored exactly to micro-vehicles, including passenger e-trikes. I worked with one of these providers last year for a fleet of 12 trikes we sold to a community transport co-op in rural Ohio, and their policy covered collision damage to the trike itself, theft, and third-party liability up to $500,000, all for about $45 a month per trike. That’s way cheaper than standard motorcycle insurance, which would have been nearly $150 a month for the same coverage. The catch here? These specialty policies aren’t offered everywhere yet—most are limited to mid-sized cities in the U.S. where micro-mobility is growing fast, like Austin, Denver, and Portland. If you’re based outside those areas, you might have to work with a local independent insurance agent who can source a specialty policy for you, rather than going directly to a big-name carrier.

Another option I’ve been pushing our business partners toward is group insurance for micro-mobility fleets. This is perfect if you’re a small business owner like I am, running 5 to 50 trikes for hire, or if you’re a co-op or community group pooling resources for a fleet. A lot of insurance companies now offer group policies designed specifically for shared micro-vehicles, including e-trikes, e-bikes, and shared scooters. The big benefit here is that group policies spread risk across multiple vehicles, so the per-unit cost is way lower than insuring each trike individually. Last year, I helped a group of 10 independent trike drivers in Chicago put together a group fleet, and we got a group policy that covered all 15 of our vehicles for $520 a month total—less than $35 per trike, per month, and it included coverage for passenger injuries, which is a huge win. A lot of drivers used to skip passenger coverage because it was too expensive, but group policies make that standard, not an add-on you have to negotiate. The downside? Group policies usually require you to have at least 5 vehicles to qualify, and a lot of underwriters want proof that you’re operating legally, with valid permits for your trike operations, before they’ll sign on. That’s not a hard bar to hit, but it’s something to prepare for before you apply.

Then there’s the coverage that’s non-negotiable, no matter what: third-party liability insurance. This is the stuff that covers you if your trike hits a pedestrian, another car, or damages someone’s property. In most states, it’s actually required for any vehicle that carries passengers or operates on public roads, and a lot of new trike owners don’t realize that. Early on, I had a customer in Atlanta who got stopped by a traffic officer six months after he bought one of our trikes, and got a $1,200 fine for driving without liability insurance. He thought his trike was “small enough” that it didn’t need coverage, but that’s not the case. The good news is that liability insurance for passenger e-trikes is way cheaper than for other vehicles. A basic policy that covers $100,000 in bodily injury and $50,000 in property damage usually runs between $20 and $30 a month, even for individual drivers. I always make sure to mention this to every customer before they take their trike off our lot, because avoiding fines is way better than paying them later.

Now, let’s talk about the gaps—because even with these options, there are still things you need to plan for. Comprehensive coverage, which covers theft, fire, and damage from weather like hail or falling trees, is still harder to find for passenger e-trikes. A lot of specialty policies will cover collision damage, but skip comprehensive unless you add it on, and even then it can add $15 to $20 a month per trike. That’s not terrible, but it’s something to factor into your budget. Also, personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments coverage for the passengers is another area where options are still limited. Some group policies include this, but individual trike policies often don’t, so a lot of drivers are on their own if a passenger gets hurt. For that reason, I always advise my customers to set aside a small emergency fund for medical costs, or to look into supplemental personal accident insurance, which is way cheaper than full passenger coverage. Most supplemental accident policies for trike passengers cost about $5 a month per rider, and cover up to $10,000 in medical bills if someone gets hurt. It’s not perfect, but it’s a good stopgap until more policies offer full passenger coverage.

I also want to talk about something that a lot of people don’t mention when it comes to insurance for these vehicles: the vehicle’s design and use case. When I built our passenger e-trikes, I designed them with safety as a top priority—they have three wheels for better stability than two-wheelers, seatbelts for every passenger, and a top speed of only 25 mph, which is way slower than most cars or motorcycles. That design actually makes insurance cheaper, because underwriters see them as less of a risk. I always tell new customers to highlight those safety features when they apply for insurance, because it can knock 10 to 15 percent off their monthly premium. For example, our trikes have a built-in GPS tracker, which is another big plus for underwriters—they’re less likely to pay out for theft if the vehicle can be tracked. We include GPS as a standard feature on all our passenger e-trikes, and every customer who’s mentioned that to their insurance agent has saved money.

Over the last five years, I’ve seen a lot of drivers get burned by skipping insurance for their trikes. I’ve had a customer whose trike was stolen from his driveway, and he had to take out a personal loan to buy a new one because he didn’t have theft coverage. I’ve had another customer who hit a parked car, and had to pay $3,000 out of pocket to fix both the car and his trike, because he skipped liability to save $25 a month. Those experiences are why I make insurance part of the conversation from day one, not something I bring up after a sale is done. The good news is that today, there are options for every kind of operator—whether you’re a solo driver with one trike, a co-op with a dozen, or a small business with a fleet. It’s not as complicated as it used to be, and you don’t have to overspend to get the coverage you need.

If you’re in the market for a passenger electric tricycle, and you’re looking to get set up with insurance that fits your operation, we’ve partnered with three specialty insurance providers that specialize in micro-mobility, so we can connect you to someone who knows exactly what your needs are. A trike is a investment, and a fleet is how you make a living. Getting the right insurance doesn’t have to be a nightmare, and it doesn’t have to break the bank.
